May is going crazy and the garden is a-buzz with bees seeking nectar. Not all my flowers are exactly ‘planned’ but the bees don’t seem to care. What with flowers and – below and swallows flying above, Summer is just round the corner – wonderful! Disturbing a slow-worm the other day (as I was mowing the lawn) I was reminded that the names of flora and fauna don’t always fit (as it slithered away at great speed). However, there are those that do – a slug is as ugly as its name, hibiscus (in leaf but not yet in flower) holds a Mediterranean quality in its name and dandelion is a name which has a childlike shape to it, suiting the ‘clocks’ which children love to blow. Look carefully and you’ll see some of these last amongst the buttercups (another lovely name).

About apthomas

I love books, reading, writing, baking, chocolate, painting, sewing, people and fairtrade - not necessarily in that order. I am a lazy gardener - who loves the garden, and a lazy housewife who likes the place to be warm and welcoming. I live in beautiful Somerset. I am enslaved by Sherpa-the-cat. Saturday mornings find me 'playing shop' in the Honey Pot - a second hand bookshop, run from my garage, where along with the books you'll find fun, friendship and refreshments - all in a good cause.

Sorry about the underlining – couldn’t get rid of it – guess my laptop needs weeding, too!
