snow away!

Whatever is all this about snow? They have so much of it around the world – why do we get in such a flap here?
Well, it was beautifully explained the other day, by a wise and knowledgeable weather man. His explanation was something like this: Britain gets cold winds from one direction, followed by wet air from another = snow. If these directions are of one kind the snow is powdery and dry, the sun comes out and the sledging is fun.  If another, the snow is wet – great for snowballs, but slippery and lethal as night time temperatures fall. If another….. and so on. We get in a mess because we can’t plan adequately, there being so many different possibilities of wind direction, with such differing outcomes.
What we really need is a plan that takes all this into account – so that we can all survive, safely at home, for up to a week.  After all, it is usually all over within a week.
I guess we could get better at dealing with weather on an individual basis – I suppose we could even persuade people to wear warm clothes (so many folk don’t understand that ‘fashion’ is something we can abandon at times like this.) We could all sort our rubbish better so that our bins don’t get clogged with stuff that could wait a week or two.  We could learn to keep a cupboard stocked for the cold weather months.  We could help out our neighbours.
Just a thought.

About apthomas

I love books, reading, writing, baking, chocolate, painting, sewing, people and fairtrade - not necessarily in that order. I am a lazy gardener - who loves the garden, and a lazy housewife who likes the place to be warm and welcoming. I live in beautiful Somerset. I am enslaved by Sherpa-the-cat. Saturday mornings find me 'playing shop' in the Honey Pot - a second hand bookshop, run from my garage, where along with the books you'll find fun, friendship and refreshments - all in a good cause.
